Romantic and Sexual Relationships

Sexual or romantic relationships may raise concerns of conflict of interest, abuse of authority, favoritism, and unfair treatment when both people are in the MIT work or academic environment, and one person holds a position of power or authority over the other. These relationships may also affect others in the work or academic environment, undermining the integrity of their supervision and evaluation as well.

These concerns exist even when the relationship is considered consensual by both individuals.

Consensual Relationships

R omantic relationships between university professors and their students are becoming less and less acceptable. Many of the new university policies that have emerged in the last few years have focused on undergraduates and how to better protect them, typically with a campus-wide ban on staff dating undergrads.
